Beyond Burns International did not begin in a boardroom. It began in a small kitchen in Accra, with a ten-year-old girl, a gas stove, and an accident that would take several years to heal.
That girl was Judith Cato-Addison. And what she experienced in the years that followed; the medical system that was underprepared, the communities that didn't know how to help, the slow and lonely road back to herself, became the foundation of everything Beyond Burns International stands for today.
Judith did not just survive her burns. She studied them. She sat with the question of why so many people in Ghana and across Africa face burn injuries without adequate care, without psychological support, without community, and without the basic dignity of being treated as whole human beings capable of full recovery.
The answer she found was not a gap in compassion. It was a gap in infrastructure. There was no organised system of care for burn survivors in Ghana, no network of support that spanned medical treatment, mental health, advocacy, and community reintegration. Someone had to build it.
So she did.
Beyond Burns International was founded to be that infrastructure. Not just a charity that responds to burns but a comprehensive ecosystem of care that walks with survivors from the moment of crisis to the fullness of life beyond it. An organisation that treats prevention as seriously as treatment, and recovery as seriously as survival.
Today, BBI works across Ghana and increasingly across Africa; funding surgeries, providing psychological care, educating communities, advocating at policy level, and building the networks of belonging that survivors need to truly thrive.
The mission has never changed. No burn survivor should face recovery alone. No burn injury should be preventable and still happen. And no survivor should be defined by what happened to them.

Compassion
We lead with empathy in every interaction. Burn injuries are traumatic; physically, emotionally, and socially. We meet every survivor where they are, without judgment and without rush, because healing cannot be hurried.
Dignity
Every person we serve is a full human being, not a patient number, not a charity case, not defined by their injury. We protect the dignity of survivors in how we speak about them, how we work with them, and how we tell their stories.
Advocacy
We believe burns are largely preventable, and that systems can and must be built to ensure survivors receive the care they deserve. We speak up in communities, in media, in policy spaces because silence changes nothing.
Community
No one heals in isolation. We build networks of belonging around survivors connecting them to each other, to professional support, and to communities that see their full potential rather than just their scars.
Intergrity
We do what we say we will do. We are transparent about how funds are used, honest about the limits of what we can offer, and accountable to the communities we serve. Trust is the foundation of everything we do.
Inclusion
Burn injuries do not discriminate and neither do we. We serve survivors regardless of age, gender, background, or geography. We actively work to reach the most underserved communities and ensure that no survivor is too remote, too young, or too overlooked to receive support.
