Prevention & Community Education

Most burns are preventable. Long before a survivor ever needs treatment, we are already working; in homes, schools, markets, and workplaces to stop the injury from happening in the first place.

Burns disproportionately affect communities where unsafe cooking practices, faulty electrical systems, and a lack of basic fire safety knowledge remain common. We meet people where they are, with practical, culturally grounded education that saves lives before a single bandage is ever needed.

What this looks like:

  • Community workshops on fire safety and burn first aid.
  • School-based fire safety education for children and teachers.
  • Workplace and market safety training, particularly for high-risk environments.
  • Public awareness campaigns on the dangers of unsafe cooking and industrial practices.
  • Policy engagement with government and health authorities on burn prevention standards.

Emergency Response & Medical Care

When prevention isn't enough and a burn happens, the first hours and days are critical. This is also the moment when families face their first devastating barrier: cost.

Burn treatment is expensive and highly specialised emergency stabilisation, skin grafts, surgical procedures, wound dressings, and infection management can quickly become unaffordable for most Ghanaian families. We step in to close that gap, working directly with hospitals and medical professionals to fund and coordinate the care survivors need, when they need it most.

What this looks like:

  • Emergency medical funding for treatment and surgical care.
  • Coordination with Korle Bu Teaching Hospital and partner medical facilities.
  • Procurement and distribution of medical consumables and wound care supplies.
  • Support navigating Ghana's healthcare system during a medical crisis.
  • Referrals to specialist burn care where available.

Psychological & Emotional Support

A burn injury does not end where the skin heals. The psychological impact; trauma, anxiety, depression, body image struggles, and grief for the life that was interrupted often lasts far longer than the physical wound, and is far less visible.

We provide survivors and their families with structured psychological care, because we believe healing the mind is not optional. It is central to what full recovery actually means.

What this looks like:

  • Individual counselling for survivors processing trauma.
  • Family counselling to support caregivers and loved ones.
  • Survivor support groups and peer community circles.
  • Mental health referrals for more intensive psychological care where needed.
  • Ongoing emotional check-ins throughout a survivor's recovery journey.

Recovery & Reintegration

Healing is not complete until a survivor can return to a full life; school, work, family, community. This final stage is often the longest, and the most overlooked by traditional burn care models.

We support survivors as they rebuild not just their bodies, but their place in the world; helping them return to school, regain physical mobility, and build sustainable livelihoods that restore independence and dignity.

What this looks like:

  • School reintegration support for child and youth survivors.
  • Physiotherapy and rehabilitation to restore mobility and function.
  • Skills training and vocational support for adult survivors re-entering the workforce.
  • Stigma reduction efforts within schools, workplaces, and communities.
  • Long-term follow-up to ensure survivors continue to thrive, not just recover.
